  • 129S6SvEvTacAusbOrigin – Imported from Taconic in 2005. Refreshed in 2010. This is an ABR substrain.
  • Common name/s – 129S6 or S6
  • Colour – Light-bellied agouti
  • Special characteristics – This strain was used extensively to establish ES cell lines for the production of targeted mutation mice. This strain was developed from the Steel subline.

  • 129X1SvJArcAusbOrigin – Imported from ARC in 2007. This is an ABR substrain.

  • Colour – White
  • Special characteristics – This strain developed from a colony now thought to have been accidentally outcrossed. This strain was used extensively to establish ES cell lines for the production targeted mutation mice.

  • Common name/s – C57BL/6J
  • Colour – Black
  • Haplotype H2K – b
  • Congenital abnormalities – Micropthalmia, corneal opacities, hydrocephalus, imperforate vagina and mucometra.
  • Special characteristics – Develop diet induced obesity, hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia. Mice fed an artherogenic diet develop atheroschlerosis. Mice develop progressive hearing loss late in life and are susceptible to noise-induced hearing loss.

  • Special characteristics – Initially bred for longevity due to a low incidence of spontaneous tumours. Adult males develop a mild adult onset diabetes-obesity syndrome.

  • Special characteristics – Commonly used for microinjection to generate transgenic lines.

  • Origin – Imported from The Jackson Laboratory in 2011. A refreshment colony was imported in 2014.

  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Special characteristics – Spontaneously develops Type 1 diabetes (IDDM). The onset in females is earlier and occurs with a higher incidence than in males.
